I was born and raised in Sacramento and am a proud product of our public school system. I grew up in North Highlands; my dad worked at McClellan AFB, and my mom was a classroom aide in Sac City Unified schools. My family first moved to Natomas more than 20 years ago. At the time, I was a single mother of one in a multi-generational household.
Now, I am a mother of four wonderful kids who have attended NUSD schools, including Bannon Creek, Witter Ranch, Natomas Middle, Paso Verde School, and Inderkum High School. My husband grew up in Natomas and attended American Lakes, Jefferson, and Natomas Jr. High -- before Natomas had a high school. I am invested in this community and want exceptional outcomes for all students.
"Monique's background in public policy and her unwavering support for public education makes her the best candidate for NUSD School Board."
Mara Harvey, President of Natomas Teachers' Association
While I am new to politics, I am not new to policy and decision-making. My first role out of college (Go Hornets!) was an internship in the Executive branch of government in Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante’s office. I feel fortunate to have been entrusted with various roles of increasing responsibility, eventually serving as the Lt. Governor’s appointed Special Advisor on Tribal Affairs.
I have also been a part-time freelance consultant for B2B communications, where I learned the value of supporting small business while being a small business owner myself.
As a Tribal Citizen of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians, I served as Chair and Member of my Tribe’s Finance Committee, ensuring fiscal integrity for all government and business transactions. As a descendant of the Indigenous Peoples of the Sacramento Valley (Miwok/Nisenan), I also value responsible stewardship of our natural resources.
Through my various roles, I have learned the importance of collaboration, integrity, community, and education.
Natomas is home for my family, and I want to ensure all students and families have access to the great opportunities available in their community. There is nothing more important than families and community, and this role has the unique purpose to serve both. As a daughter of a special education classroom aide, I know the importance of educators and schools.
Education as an Equalizer
I was the first in my family to attend college. This was a monumental culture shift for me, and has also opened doors to places I didn’t know existed. With four children in public schools, I have also learned that one size does not fit all when it comes to education. Families should have options that suit their children’s learning and personality. This is where Natomas schools excel.
Community Work
When it comes to my community, I rarely say no when help is needed. Some of the various roles and organizations I have committed to over the years include:
